Rapid City residents will soon preserve a snapshot of life in 2026 as officials prepare to bury a community time capsule filled with items reflecting the city’s present and its future.
The capsule, set to be interred May 29 at Founders Park, will include 28 items selected through community input and is intended to be opened in 2076 during Rapid City’s bicentennial and the nation’s tricentennial.
Among the items are fact sheets on the cost of living and local demographics, newspaper editions, a smartphone representing current technology, and cultural items recognizing the region’s Native heritage. Historical references, including materials tied to the 1972 flood, will also be included, along with local keepsakes such as a Rapid City Rush hockey puck and Post 22 baseball.
The capsule will also contain written predictions from residents, with expectations ranging from significant population growth to concerns about housing costs, infrastructure strain and resource availability. Others envisioned more automation, expanded amenities and shifts in how people live and work.
Some items will be displayed at City Hall ahead of the ceremony, which is open to the public.
