Law enforcement agencies across Pennington County are taking part in the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign through the end of the month to boost seat belt use during the busy Memorial Day travel season.
Officers say they will take a zero-tolerance approach, issuing citations around the clock to drivers and passengers who are not buckled up.
Enforcement will particularly target nighttime travel, when 56% of unrestrained fatalities occur between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Data also indicates a higher share of men killed in crashes were not wearing seat belts compared to women.
The effort includes the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rapid City Police Department, the South Dakota Office of Highway Safety, and federal transportation partners.
