A 70-year-old woman has died after being struck by a bison while hiking on the Grace Coolidge Trail, according to South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks.
Officials said the incident occurred Monday, May 18, when the woman and her husband encountered a group of bull bison along the trail. The animal struck the woman in the back, and she later died from her injuries.
Park staff removed the bison involved from the immediate area following the attack and are reviewing safety measures to help prevent similar incidents.
Wildlife officials noted that dry conditions have caused bison herds to spread out more than usual, increasing the likelihood of close encounters with visitors.
Authorities are urging hikers to remain “bison wise” by keeping a safe distance, making noise while on trails, and using extra caution near corners and ridgelines. Officials emphasized that bison are wild animals and can be unpredictable, and visitors should always treat them with caution.
