Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun has selected Carla Cushman to serve as the city’s next city attorney, a move that now awaits confirmation by the Rapid City Common Council.
Council members are expected to consider the appointment at their next meeting on June 1.
Cushman has been serving as interim city attorney since April 1 following the departure of longtime city attorney Joel Landeen.
“Carla Cushman has earned the opportunity to serve as the next City Attorney for Rapid City,” Salamun said in a statement. “She is a dedicated and experienced attorney who is a true professional, solid leader, and respected public servant. Rapid City is in good hands with her as City Attorney.”
The mayor said Cushman’s nomination follows a detailed search process that began in early April.
Cushman has worked in the Rapid City Attorney’s Office since 2012. She is a graduate of Augustana College and the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law.
If confirmed, she will assume the position on a permanent basis after serving two months in the interim role.
