Yard waste and recycling containers near Fitzgerald Stadium will be temporarily removed next week and throughout the summer to accommodate several large youth baseball tournaments, city officials said.
The Rapid City Council earlier this year approved a request from the Rapid City Sports Commission to clear the site during four scheduled tournaments to allow for additional parking. The move marks the fourth consecutive year the containers have been removed for the events.
The first closure will coincide with the Veterans Classic, set for June 4–7, with containers removed for about eight days to allow for setup, cleanup and reinstallation, officials said.
Additional closures are planned for the Firecracker Tournament (July 1–5), the Dave Ploof Legacy Tournament (July 10–12), and the State Tournament (July 28–Aug. 1). Each closure will include two days before and after the events.
During those periods, residents are advised to use alternative disposal sites, including the Nickel Street location or the Rapid City Landfill, or schedule drop-offs outside the closure windows.
City traffic officials will post signs near the Fitzgerald Stadium site ahead of each closure.
