Asphalt paving begins today, on a 13‑mile stretch of U.S. Highway 16A through Custer State Park, with drivers advised to expect delays.
The work runs from the park’s east entrance to the west entrance and will involve pilot cars and flaggers. Paving is tentatively set to finish July 1, with a pause over the Fourth of July weekend. A flush and sand seal is scheduled afterward through July 11.
Crews are currently replacing culverts using temporary signals and flaggers. After paving, guardrail installation will take about three weeks.
The $15.6 million project is led by Paul Reed Construction & Supply Inc. of Gering, Nebraska, with full completion set for Oct. 30, 2026. Park amenities will remain accessible during construction.
