Rescuers assisted an injured hiker after the person slipped on steep terrain and broke a leg more than a mile from a trailhead along Highway 87.
Emergency crews were dispatched about 12:35 p.m Wednesday. responding with Custer Ambulance Service, National Park Service personnel, the Custer County Sheriff’s Office and the Pringle Volunteer Fire Department.
The hiker used a Garmin InReach satellite device to call for help, with coordinates relayed to local dispatchers.
Paramedics treated the patient at the scene before placing them in a wheeled litter and carrying them about 150 yards to a utility vehicle. A belay line was used to navigate a steep section during the extraction. The patient was then transported to an awaiting ambulance at the trailhead.
Officials said the coordinated response helped ensure a safe rescue.
