Voters across South Dakota are casting ballots today in a wide-ranging primary election that will determine party nominees for key federal, state, and local offices.
Polling places are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time, with races on the ballot including governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, and dozens of legislative and local contests.
The most closely watched race is the four-way Republican primary for governor, featuring Gov. Larry Rhoden, U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson, House Speaker Jon Hansen, and businessman Toby Doeden. A candidate must receive at least 35% of the vote to win outright or advance to a possible runoff election.
Republican voters are also deciding nominations in a U.S. Senate race, where incumbent Mike Rounds faces Justin McNeal, and for the state’s open U.S. House seat, with Attorney General Marty Jackley competing against James Bialota.
In addition to statewide contests, voters are weighing in on legislative races and numerous local elections, many of which appear on the primary ballot due to a recent law aligning election dates.
