A slate of closely watched Republican Senate primaries across western South Dakota delivered a mix of stability and surprises Tuesday night, with incumbents largely holding their ground but a key upset signaling shifting dynamics among GOP voters.
District 33: Johnson Unseats Incumbent in Key Upset
The night’s most notable upset came in District 33, where former legislator David Johnson defeated incumbent Sen. Curt Voight in a tight race, 2,409 to 2,240.
District 29: Meirose Edges Out Sitting Senator
District 29 produced another upset, with William Meirose of Sturgis narrowly defeating incumbent Sen. John Carley of Piedmont, 2,280 to 2,151.
District 35: Blanc Survives Tight Challenge
In one of the closest races of the night, Sen. Greg Blanc of Rapid City narrowly held off challenger Nicole Mitzel, winning 1,289 to 1,180.
District 34: Howard Wins Rematch Comfortably
Sen. Taffy Howard of Rapid City secured a solid victory in a rematch against Jason Green, prevailing 2,334 to 1,760.
District 32: Duhamel Turns Back Challenger Again
In another rematch of their 2024 general election battle, Sen. Helene Duhamel easily defeated Karen McNeal, winning 1,316 to 759.
District 31: Deibert Defeats Familiar Opponent
Sen. Randy Deibert of Spearfish secured reelection with a comfortable margin over former legislator John Teupel, 2,692 to 2,077.
District 30: Hulse Dominates 2024 Rematch
In a high-profile rematch, Sen. Amber Hulse of Hot Springs decisively defeated former lawmaker Julie Frye-Mueller, 4,139 to 2,084.
District 28: Marty Holds Off Maher Challenge
Rounding out the contests, Sen. Sam Marty of Prairie City defeated former legislator Ryan Maher of Isabel, 2,095 to 1,950.
