Yard waste and recycling containers located near Fitzgerald Stadium have been temporarily removed this week to accommodate increased parking demand for the upcoming Veterans Classic baseball tournament.
City officials said the containers will be removed for an eight-day period surrounding the tournament, which runs June 4–7. The temporary closure is part of a recurring plan approved by the Rapid City Council in February at the request of the Rapid City Sports Commission.
This marks the fourth consecutive year the containers have been removed during major summer baseball tournaments to provide additional space for vehicles. The events routinely draw large crowds, creating a need for expanded parking capacity near the stadium.
During the temporary closures, residents are encouraged to use alternative disposal sites, including the Nickel Street location or the Rapid City Landfill. Residents may also plan yard waste and recycling drop-offs outside of the closure periods.
City Traffic Operations crews will place signage near the Fitzgerald Stadium site ahead of each closure to inform the public of the temporary changes.
