South Dakota Secretary of State Monae L. Johnson is reminding voters that absentee voting for the Republican gubernatorial runoff election will begin June 12, ahead of the July 28 election date.
The runoff election follows the recent primary and will determine the party’s nominee for governor. Voters who previously requested and received an absentee ballot for the primary election will automatically be eligible to vote absentee in the runoff. According to the Secretary of State’s Office, those voters do not need to submit a new application, as county auditors will mail ballots directly to them.
For voters who did not participate absentee in the primary but wish to do so in the runoff, an application must be submitted to their county auditor no later than 5 p.m. on July 27. Officials emphasize that when filling out the absentee ballot request form, voters should select “Primary Election” to ensure proper processing for the runoff.
Johnson’s office is encouraging residents to plan ahead and make sure their paperwork is submitted in time to avoid delays. Election officials also remind voters to carefully follow instructions when completing and returning their ballots to ensure they are counted.
Those with questions about absentee voting procedures or runoff election details are encouraged to contact their local county auditor or visit the South Dakota Secretary of State’s website for more information.
