Rapid City’s popular “Splish Splash Birthday Bash” hydrant parties have been canceled this summer due to drought conditions and water restrictions, city officials said.
The events, planned for June 17 at Sioux Park and July 8 at College Park, typically feature firefighters spraying water on participants and include involvement from police, the public library and the city’s solid waste division.
“The Splish Splash fire hydrant parties are very popular and the kids and families love them, but under the circumstances, due to the severe drought conditions and water restrictions, we need to cancel this summer’s events,” Recreation Special Events Coordinator Lindsey Myers said.
Myers encouraged families to take part in other summer activities at city pools, with details available on the Rapid City Parks and Recreation Facebook page.
