South Dakota Mines is planning a new geology field station near Nemo to support student fieldwork in the Black Hills.
The 9,000-plus-square-foot facility will provide housing and collaborative space for students completing required field camps, eliminating the need to commute daily from Rapid City. The project is being developed with the university’s Center for Alumni Relations and Advancement.
Officials said the station will serve as a hands-on learning hub, allowing students to study geology in the field while working closely with faculty. The project is expected to cost more than $6 million and will be funded through private donations.
A public meeting to discuss the project is scheduled for this evening at the Nemo Community Hall.
