Authorities in Sturgis say only minor injuries were reported following a collision between a train and a pickup Saturday morning.
According to Sturgis Police, the crash occurred at approximately 9:46 a.m. on Park Street, just west of its intersection with Pine Street. Meade County Dispatch received a 911 call reporting that a pickup had been struck by a train.
Officers arriving at the scene found a Chevy Colorado that had been traveling west on Park Street, while a Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern (RCPE) train was heading south along the railroad tracks.
Authorities said the driver of the pickup did not see the oncoming train until the vehicle was already on the tracks and attempted to reverse. However, the driver accidentally shifted the vehicle into park, leaving it stalled in the train’s path. The train then struck the pickup on the front passenger side.
The driver sustained minor injuries but was treated and cleared by emergency medical personnel at the scene and later released. Authorities have not released the driver’s name.
No injuries were reported among the train crew, according to police.
