Rapid City Streets Division crews wrapped up another successful “Sweeps Month” in May, covering nearly every street in the city and removing hundreds of tons of debris.
Using a fleet of 10 sweepers, crews cleaned 3,595 miles of roadway and collected more than 311 tons of material left behind from winter conditions. Workers logged more than 700 hours operating the equipment throughout the month.
The effort marks the second consecutive year crews have taken on the challenge, bringing the two-year total to more than 7,700 miles swept and nearly 700 tons of debris removed.
In addition to sweeping, crews exceeded expectations on pothole repairs, filling nearly 4,300—well above the 3,000 goal.
City officials say sweepers help remove thousands of tons of gravel, dirt, trash, and debris each year, improving road conditions and safety. Collected materials are processed and ultimately reused at the local landfill.
Sweeping typically occurs in residential areas during the day and on main roads at night to reduce traffic disruptions.
