Much of western South Dakota continues to face significant drought conditions, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor report.
Statewide, more than half of South Dakota—about 53 percent—is experiencing drought, with an additional 30 percent classified as abnormally dry.
The most severe conditions are concentrated across western portions of the state, including the Black Hills region, where areas of severe to extreme drought dominate the landscape.
The report shows roughly 23 percent of the state in severe drought and more than 11 percent in extreme drought.
Experts say recent weather patterns have contributed to the ongoing dryness. While scattered thunderstorms have brought limited relief in parts of the Plains, much of the region—including western South Dakota—remains dry and has seen above-normal temperatures, further stressing soil moisture and vegetation.
