Drivers in western South Dakota should prepare for delays as multiple chip seal projects are set to begin Wednesday along U.S. Highway 212.
According to transportation officials, crews will work on several stretches of the highway in sequence, starting from Dupree to Faith, then moving from Maurine to Newell, and finishing east of Belle Fourche.
During construction, traffic will be reduced to a single lane in work zones, with flaggers and pilot cars directing vehicles. Motorists can expect daytime delays and are urged to slow down due to loose rock and fresh oil following chip seal application. A speed limit of 40 mph—or lower where posted—will be enforced throughout the work areas.
The project is weather dependent but is expected to be completed by June 26, with pavement markings to follow shortly after.
The $2.8 million project is being carried out by Asphalt Surface Technologies Corporation of St. Cloud, Minnesota, with overall completion scheduled for October 2, 2026.
Officials encourage travelers to plan ahead and use caution when driving through construction zones.
