Firefighters continue making steady progress on the South Fork Fire in northwest Nebraska, as the wildfire has now burned 39,057 acres and is approximately 74% contained.
The fire, first discovered June 9, has been active for about a week and is classified as a Type 2 incident, indicating a significant, multi-day response requiring substantial resources. Officials report about 482 personnel remain assigned to the firefight.
Growth of the fire has slowed in recent days, with about 143 acres added in the past 24 hours. The blaze is believed to have been caused by natural factors.
Crews are focused on strengthening containment lines and mopping up hotspots across the fire area, located in rugged terrain within the Rocky Mountain region.
Despite improved containment, officials continue to warn that the area remains hazardous, with ongoing firefighting operations and lingering heat posing risks.
