Wind Cave National Park officials say three bats found since early May have tested positive for rabies.
The bats were discovered in separate locations, including near the Elevator Building, by the Visitor Center entrance, and at the campground. One bat was alive but unable to fly, while the others were found dead. No visitor contact has been reported.
Officials warn that any interaction with a bat—alive or dead—should be treated as a possible rabies exposure, as bites or scratches can be difficult to detect. Rabies is fatal but preventable with prompt medical treatment.
The park is monitoring the situation with state and federal health officials. Anyone who may have had contact with a bat is urged to contact the South Dakota Department of Health and seek medical care.
