The City of Sturgis is exploring the addition of curbside recycling service for residents, marking a potential first for the community.
Earlier this month, the city finalized a contract with Kieffer Sanitation for trash collection. Under the proposed plan, curbside recycling would be offered as an optional, opt-in service, while the existing public recycling drop-off site would remain available.
Public Works Director Rick Bush said the program is designed to provide added convenience without mandating participation. “It’s an enhancement to our solid waste service,” Bush said, noting residents could choose whether to participate.
City officials say the program could begin around Sept. 1 if enough residents express interest, with a goal of at least 20% participation. Costs will depend on how many households sign up.
Residents interested in the service are encouraged to contact the Public Works Department this summer to opt in or out.
