A Rapid City woman has been sentenced to time served after admitting to illegally purchasing a firearm for a convicted felon.
Loveletta Bissonette, 22, received more than six months credit for time already served, followed by three years of supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for South Dakota. She was also ordered to pay a $100 assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Bissonette pleaded guilty in January after being charged with making false statements during a gun purchase. Prosecutors said she bought a firearm on behalf of Dakota Moore, who is prohibited from possessing weapons due to a felony conviction.
After one business refused to sell her a gun due to suspicion, Bissonette purchased one from another dealer by falsely claiming it was for herself. Within a week, law enforcement recovered the firearm during a traffic stop, finding Moore in possession of the weapon.
Officials emphasized that buying a firearm for a prohibited person is a federal crime and warned others against participating in similar schemes. The case was investigated by federal agents and Rapid City police.
