Leaders are urging Congress to renew a key federal funding program as improvements at Badlands National Park and other South Dakota sites face an uncertain future.
According to South Dakota Searchlight, The National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund (LRF), created in 2020 to address aging infrastructure, expired in September 2025. During its first five years, the fund supported major upgrades at Badlands, including a new headquarters and visitor center improvements, replacing outdated facilities that had long hindered park operations.
Statewide, the fund invested more than $134 million in projects such as trail repairs, historic preservation and visitor access upgrades. Supporters warn that without reauthorization, needed repairs could stall, costs could rise and visitor experiences may deteriorate.
National parks play a major role in South Dakota’s economy, drawing 3.9 million visitors in 2024 and generating more than $525 million in local spending. Lawmakers are now considering bipartisan legislation to restore the funding and continue long-term preservation efforts.
