Rapid City police arrested a 35-year-old man Sunday afternoon following a brief pursuit that began with reports of substance abuse in a residential driveway.
At approximately 3:50 p.m. on June 21, officers responded to the 100 block of Crescent Drive after receiving a call about a man sitting in an SUV and allegedly inhaling air duster. Upon arrival, police identified the driver as Miles Makesgood of Rapid City.
Officers attempted to block the vehicle in the driveway, but Makesgood drove around patrol units, prompting a low-speed chase through the Star Village area. During the pursuit, he drove through a yard in the unit block of East Signal Drive.
Police deployed spike strips near East Boulevard and Quincy Street, successfully deflating the vehicle’s tires. The SUV eventually returned to Star Village and stopped in the 100 block of East Signal Drive, where Makesgood exited and was taken into custody without further incident.
Officers reported finding a cold can of air duster on Makesgood, and determined he was too impaired to safely operate a vehicle.
Makesgood was arrested and transported to the Pennington County Jail on multiple charges, including ingesting a substance to intoxicate, second-offense DUI, reckless driving, second-degree eluding, driving on the wrong side of the road, driving under suspension, and possession of a revoked or altered driver’s license.
