The Meade County Commission has approved the first reading of an ordinance that would create a local sales tax aimed at reducing property taxes for residents.
Ordinance 60 proposes a gross receipts tax of up to 0.5% on goods, services, and digital products sold within the county, following new authority granted to counties under a law passed during the 2026 legislative session.
If adopted, revenue from the tax would fund credits for owner-occupied property owners, offsetting the county portion of their property tax bills. The county could retain a small portion for administrative costs, with any surplus used to reduce other property taxes, including agricultural land.
Commissioners are expected to consider the ordinance further in upcoming meetings.
