Several new South Dakota laws will take effect July 1, including measures affecting food assistance, school meals, marriage, health care and data centers.
Among the changes, the state will seek federal approval to ban soft drink purchases through SNAP benefits, create reimbursement guidelines for schools providing free and reduced-price meals, and establish a new crime targeting fertility fraud.
Other laws include additional oversight of data centers to help protect utility customers and a requirement that 16- and 17-year-olds obtain judicial approval before getting married.
A law prohibiting the sale, distribution and advertising of abortion pills is also scheduled to take effect, though it is currently facing a court challenge.
More than 200 bills were signed into law during the 2026 legislative session, with most taking effect July 1 unless they were approved with emergency clauses.
