Rapid City crews are stepping up mosquito control efforts as residents prepare for Independence Day celebrations later this week.
City officials said mosquito-control briquettes have been used to treat standing water since May, targeting areas where mosquitoes are most likely to breed. Spraying operations have also been concentrated in high-traffic locations throughout the city to help reduce mosquito populations ahead of the holiday.
Residents are encouraged to do their part by eliminating standing water around their homes, including in bird baths, buckets, gutters and other containers where mosquitoes can reproduce. Officials also recommend using insect repellent when spending time outdoors.
Mosquito control activities will continue throughout the summer as crews monitor conditions and respond to areas of concern.
Residents seeking additional information about mosquito control efforts can contact the Rapid City Parks Division.
