The South Dakota Board of Elections has postponed a decision on proposed rule changes tied to the state’s new voter citizenship law, which requires proof of U.S. citizenship for voters to participate in state and local elections.
The League of Women Voters is asking the board to allow photocopies of driver’s licenses, tribal IDs and state ID cards as proof of citizenship and to make voter registration requirements clearer. Supporters told the board the changes would improve access and consistency across counties. No opposition testimony was presented. Based on current interpretations, voters who do not provide the required documentation can still vote in federal elections but not state or local contests.
With only four of seven board members present, no action was taken. The issue is expected to return for consideration later this month.
