Fire crews quickly contained and extinguished a grass fire sparked by juveniles using fireworks near the intersection of Catron Boulevard and Dan Christy Lane.
When firefighters arrived, flames were reaching one to two feet in height and spreading rapidly through dry vegetation. Crews were able to gain control of the blaze and prevent it from growing beyond the initial burn area.
The fire ultimately burned approximately one-quarter acre before being extinguished.
Fire officials said the incident serves as a reminder of the dangers fireworks can pose during dry conditions. Even a small spark can ignite fast-moving grass fires, especially when dry vegetation and wind are present.
Authorities are urging the public to use extreme caution with fireworks where they are permitted and to consider current fire conditions before use to help prevent similar incidents during the Fourth of July holiday.
