South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has announced that a Mike Durfee State Prison inmate has been found guilty on two felony charges involving the possession of illegal substances while incarcerated.
Keith Hawk, 41, was convicted Wednesday by a Bon Homme County Circuit Court jury of one felony count of Possession of a Prohibited Substance by an Inmate and one felony count of Unauthorized Possession of a Controlled Substance.
According to prosecutors, the offenses occurred on Nov. 18, 2025, at the Mike Durfee State Prison. The substance involved in the case was identified as K2, a synthetic drug commonly referred to as synthetic marijuana.
Hawk faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for the Possession of a Prohibited Substance by an Inmate conviction and up to five years in prison for the Unauthorized Possession of a Controlled Substance conviction. Because Hawk is already an inmate, the penalties for each conviction could be doubled under state law.
Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 21, 2026.
The case was investigated by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI). Prosecutors with the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office handled the prosecution.
