An 18-year-old Rapid City man was killed in a two-vehicle crash on South Dakota Highway 40 east of Hermosa on Wednesday, July 1.
According to preliminary information, Carlos Ray Cross, driving a 2019 Toyota Camry westbound near mile marker 52, crossed into the eastbound lane around 5:54 p.m. A 2021 Ford Explorer driven by Alicia Nicole Hayden, 34, attempted to avoid the collision, but the vehicles struck each other.
Cross, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. Hayden suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a Rapid City hospital.
Three passengers in the Explorer — Tylar Elizabeth Causey, 35, of Hermosa, a 7-year-old girl, and a 7-year-old boy — sustained minor injuries.
Highway 40 was closed for about an hour following the crash. The South Dakota Highway Patrol’s investigation remains ongoing.
