Christine Erickson remained the winner of the Sioux Falls mayoral race after a two-day recount concluded Thursday, giving her a four-vote victory over Jamie Smith.
The final recount tally showed Erickson with 18,281 votes to Smith’s 18,277. The recount widened Erickson’s original certified lead from two votes to four.
Erickson is scheduled to be sworn in as mayor on July 17 and would become the first woman elected mayor of Sioux Falls, barring any legal challenge.
Smith said Thursday he is not conceding the race and is considering an election contest, a legal process allowed under South Dakota law that can challenge aspects of an election other than the accuracy of the ballot count. Any contest must be filed within five days of the recount.
The recount followed the June runoff election, where Erickson and Smith advanced after no candidate secured a majority in the June 3 election.
