Fire crews successfully contained two recent wildfires in western South Dakota as hot, dry conditions continue to elevate fire danger across the Black Hills region.
The Harding Peak Fire in Harding County was declared 100% contained Sunday evening. Officials said the wildfire was held to 5.6 acres, reached full containment at approximately 5 p.m., and caused no reported injuries or structural damage.
Meanwhile, firefighters responded Friday night to the Mountain Fire, a grass fire about five miles southeast of Elk Mountain in Custer County. Crews were dispatched shortly after 8 p.m. and contained the blaze at an estimated 2 acres. No evacuations, road closures, or damaged structures were reported.
The quick containment of both fires comes as western South Dakota remains under very high fire danger, prompting officials to urge caution with any activities that could spark a wildfire.
