Open burning is prohibited Monday in Pennington County as the Grasslands Fire Danger Rating has reached Very High, county officials announced.
Under Pennington County Ordinance No. 726, adopted in 2021, county officials can ban open burning when fire danger reaches certain levels based on the National Weather Service Grassland Fire Danger Index.
The ban includes burn piles, slash burning, burn barrels, and any fires that are not fully enclosed or vented through a chimney or duct stack.
Officials urge residents to use extreme caution with any activity that could spark a fire, as hot, dry, and windy conditions continue across western South Dakota.
Violating the burn ban can result in a $500 fine, up to 30 days in jail, or both, according to county regulations.
