Roblox has agreed to pay South Dakota nearly $10 million over four years and implement enhanced protections for young users as part of a settlement announced by the state Attorney General.
Under the agreement, Roblox which is an immersive gaming and creation platform, will use facial age-estimation technology and government-issued identification to verify users’ ages in an effort to reduce the risk of child exploitation on the platform. The company will also spend $1 million on online safety education and advertising for South Dakota families.
Settlement funds will support the Attorney General’s Office and the South Dakota Department of Education. The agreement also requires reporting measures and cooperation with law enforcement, with the possibility of additional payments if Roblox fails to meet its obligations.
State officials said the settlement is aimed at strengthening online safety protections for children and helping prevent exploitation cases involving minors.
