Western South Dakota remained under a prolonged heat wave Tuesday as temperatures climbed into the triple digits across much of the region, prompting continued heat advisories from the National Weather Service.
The temperature reached 102 in Downtown Rapid City, tying the previous record, Regional Airport and Spearfish both recorded 103 while Ft Meade reported a high of 106. Temperatures are expected to stay near triple digits or above through most of the weekend.
The National Weather Service warned that dangerous heat, combined with dry and breezy conditions, could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses and elevate fire danger throughout the region. A heat advisory remains in effect across much of western South Dakota through Thursday evening.
Officials are urging residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, and check on vulnerable family members, neighbors, and pets.
