A Tyrannosaurus rex fossil discovered in western South Dakota sold for a record $50.13 million at a Sotheby’s auction, making it one of the most valuable dinosaur fossils ever sold.
The specimen, known as “Gus,” was unearthed from the Hell Creek Formation in Harding County and is considered one of the largest and most complete T. rex skeletons ever discovered. The mounted fossil measures about 38 feet long and 12½ feet tall.
Researchers say the skeleton includes a well-preserved skull, complete pelvis and evidence of healed injuries, offering a rare look into the dinosaur’s life.
The sale surpasses the $8.36 million paid for South Dakota’s famous “Sue” T. rex in 1997, highlighting the enduring scientific and public fascination with the state’s rich dinosaur heritage.
