A fire damaged a commercial building in Summerset on Wednesday afternoon, forcing several businesses including a daycare with children present to vacate the structure.
The Piedmont Fire Department responded around 2:30 p.m. to the 8000 block of Stagestop Road, where firefighters found heavy fire in an enclosed canopy attached to a single-story commercial building. Due to the building’s size and temperatures approaching 100 degrees, a second alarm was requested early in the incident to bring in additional manpower.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the original structure, though flames extended into attic spaces above several offices. Officials said the building remains unoccupiable because of fire damage and firefighting operations, but efforts helped save property inside for the affected businesses.
All occupants safely evacuated, and no civilian injuries were reported. Two firefighters were treated at the scene for heat-related injuries and later released.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the South Dakota State Fire Marshal’s Office. Multiple area fire, law enforcement, EMS, and utility agencies assisted in the response.
