A highway improvement project on S.D. Highway 471 near Edgemont will begin Thursday, July 16, with pipe replacement work that will require single-lane traffic controlled by stop signs.
The project will shift to asphalt milling on Aug. 11, covering 8.5 miles of Highway 471 between Edgemont and Provo, along with a half-mile section of Highway 18P east of Edgemont. Milling is expected to take about four days.
Asphalt paving is scheduled to start Aug. 17 and continue for approximately three weeks. During both milling and paving operations, motorists should expect delays as traffic will be guided through the work zone by pilot cars and flaggers.
Additional work in early September includes placing 12.5 miles of base course on Highway 471 between Provo and the intersection of Highways 471 and 71. That phase is expected to take about three weeks.
Western Construction of Rapid City is the prime contractor for the $4 million project, which is scheduled for completion by Nov. 6, 2026.
