A new Emerson College Polling/KELOLAND Media Group survey shows Gov. Larry Rhoden leading the Republican gubernatorial runoff with 62% support, compared to 32% for Aberdeen businessman Toby Doeden, while 7% remain undecided.
The runoff election is scheduled for July 28 after no candidate received the required 35% of the vote in the June 2 primary. Rhoden called the poll “encouraging” but said the campaign will continue working to reach voters.
Doeden dismissed the results, citing his campaign’s internal polling and predicting victory in what is expected to be a low-turnout election.
The poll also found strong support for Rhoden among voters who backed former primary opponents Dusty Johnson and Jon Hansen with Rhoden pulling in 95 percent of Johnson voters and 69 percent of Hansen voters. Both campaigns emphasized that the only poll that matters is the July 28 election result.
