A driver died Friday morning following a law enforcement response that began on Interstate 90 and ended in a parking lot in Sturgis, according to the Sturgis Police Department and Meade County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said Spearfish 911 received a call around 10:43 a.m. reporting concerns about a driver traveling eastbound on I-90. South Dakota Highway Patrol troopers located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver continued into Sturgis before exiting the interstate and stopping in a parking lot in the 2600 block of Whitewood Service Road.
Officials said the driver sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound as the vehicle came to a stop. Emergency responders provided aid, but the individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
The person’s identity has not been released pending notification of family members. The Sturgis Police Department and Meade County Sheriff’s Office are assisting in a joint investigation.
Officials said they issued information about the incident because it occurred in a public location and generated significant community concern.
