The South Dakota Supreme Court has appointed Timothy Barnaud as a magistrate judge for the Fourth Judicial Circuit, filling the vacancy created when Chad Callahan was elevated to circuit judge.
Barnaud, a Belle Fourche-area native, will take the bench on July 27. He brings experience in several areas of law, including criminal law, estate planning, and environmental law. Since January 2025, he has served as Butte County state’s attorney.
The Fourth Judicial Circuit serves Butte, Corson, Dewey, Harding, Lawrence, Meade, Perkins, and Ziebach counties. Court officials said Barnaud’s legal background and public service experience will help support the circuit’s judicial needs across western South Dakota.
