As the 86th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally approaches Aug. 7-16, 2026, the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) is preparing for increased traffic by installing temporary traffic signals, reducing speed limits on key routes, and deploying electronic message boards throughout the Black Hills region.
Temporary traffic signals will be activated at eight high-traffic intersections, including locations along Highways 34 and 79 near Sturgis, Fort Meade, Buffalo Chip, and Interstate 90 Exit 55. The signals will operate from July 31 through Aug. 17 to help manage rally-related traffic congestion.
SDDOT also announced temporary speed limit reductions from Aug. 6-16. Interstate 90 speeds will be lowered from 75 mph to 65 mph between Rapid City and Sturgis, while portions of Highway 34 and Highway 79 near major rally venues and campgrounds will see reduced limits ranging from 35 mph to 45 mph.
In addition, dynamic message boards and speed trailers will be placed throughout the region to provide real-time information on traffic conditions, crashes, weather events, and delays.
The department said construction on the U.S. Highway 385 project between Pactola Dam and Calumet Road will be suspended from Aug. 5-18 to minimize disruptions during the rally. Motorists are still urged to remain alert for potential traffic adjustments.
SDDOT will publish weekday traffic counts at nine locations around Sturgis throughout the rally and provide traveler information, maps, and updates through its Rally Traveler Information webpage. A final traffic report will be released after the event concludes.
