RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Rapid City Area School Board on Tuesday approved the district’s $214.8 million budget for fiscal year 2027, featuring a 2.5% compensation increase for employees and a major investment in the Rapid Valley Elementary addition and renovation project.
The budget includes more than $97 million for the general fund and nearly $49 million for capital outlay. Capital outlay spending increased by $16.3 million, largely due to the Rapid Valley Elementary project.
Superintendent Dr. Jami Jo Thompson said the budget was shaped by rising property valuations, declining enrollment, changes to the state funding formula and the district’s focus on attracting and retaining staff.
Thompson described the spending plan as fiscally conservative and focused on balancing taxpayer interests with providing a high-quality education.
