BOX ELDER, S.D.— A 50-year-old Rapid City man was taken into custody Friday following a vehicle pursuit involving the South Dakota Highway Patrol and several law enforcement agencies in and around Box Elder.
According to preliminary information, the driver of a 2019 Toyota Tundra left Love’s Truck Stop after Pennington County dispatch received a report of a theft at the location. Officers with the Box Elder Police Department located the vehicle traveling eastbound on Interstate 90 near mile marker 67 and attempted a traffic stop at approximately 10:39 a.m.
The driver failed to stop, leading officers on a pursuit that involved the South Dakota Highway Patrol. The chase continued onto Highway 14/16 and several rural roads before returning westbound on I-90. After crossing into Wyoming, the pickup spun out and left the roadway. As the driver attempted to regain control, a South Dakota Highway Patrol vehicle pinned the truck against a tree, bringing the pursuit to an end.
The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken into custody without injury and without further incident.
Agencies assisting in the pursuit included the Box Elder Police Department, Meade County law enforcement, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, the Crook County Sheriff’s Office in Wyoming, and the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
The incident remains under investigation, and all information released is preliminary.
