BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State University Extension is urging livestock producers to test water supplies as drought conditions and elevated salt levels continue to impact water sources across the state.
Recent testing has found that some ponds, creeks, and streams contain salt concentrations that may be unsafe for livestock. Extension officials say naturally salty soils, combined with limited snowfall, ongoing drought, and windy conditions, have contributed to deteriorating water quality.
Free water testing is available at all eight SDSU Extension regional centers and select county offices. Producers can submit water samples in clean plastic or glass containers for analysis of total salt concentration.
