BLACK HILLS, S.D./WYO. — The Black Hills National Forest has implemented Stage 2 Fire Restrictions as hot, dry conditions continue to elevate wildfire danger across the region.
The restrictions apply to all national forest lands in South Dakota and Wyoming, including campgrounds and day-use areas, and are intended to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires.
Under the restrictions, campfires, charcoal grills, smoking outside enclosed vehicles or buildings, welding, open-flame torches, explosives, and driving or parking motor vehicles off designated roads and trails are prohibited, with limited exceptions for gas- or liquid-fueled devices used in cleared areas.
Forest officials said the restrictions are necessary to protect public safety and firefighters amid critical fire weather conditions and increasing wildfire activity across the Black Hills. The restrictions will remain in effect until Dec. 27, 2026, unless lifted earlier.
