PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota Republicans are voting today in the state’s first-ever gubernatorial runoff election, choosing between incumbent Gov. Larry Rhoden and Aberdeen businessman Toby Doeden for the Republican nomination for governor.
The runoff was triggered after no candidate received the required 35% of the vote in the June 2 Republican primary. Doeden led the primary field with 31% of the vote, followed by Rhoden at 25%.
Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time, and voting is limited to registered Republicans. The winner will advance to the Nov. 3 general election to face Democratic nominee Dan Ahlers.
The election marks the first gubernatorial runoff since South Dakota adopted a 1985 law requiring a runoff when no candidate secures at least 35% support in a primary race.
