A hiker with a broken leg was rescued near the summit of Black Elk Peak on Saturday after falling several feet while climbing on rocks below the peak.
Custer County Search and rescue crews responded shortly before 9 a.m. and requested assistance from a South Dakota National Guard helicopter due to the severe injury, difficult terrain and extreme heat. A paramedic reached and stabilized the patient before the helicopter airlifted the hiker to further medical care.
Rescuers also reminded hikers to carry plenty of water while recreating in hot weather.
