RAPID CITY, S.D. — A 23-year-old Box Elder man has been arrested on an attempted murder charge following an early-morning shooting Sunday in Rapid City.
According to police, officers were dispatched at approximately 3:10 a.m. July 27 to the area of Van Buren Street and Dilger Avenue after receiving a report of a person who had been shot.
When officers arrived, they found the male victim walking in the roadway with a gunshot wound. Police provided emergency first aid until medical personnel arrived and transported the victim to a hospital for treatment.
During the investigation, officers received information linking residences at 736 N. Seventh Street to the shooting. Police responded to the address and detained several individuals for questioning.
One of those detained was identified as Mario Moran, 23, of Box Elder. Officers initially arrested Moran for possession of a controlled substance after allegedly finding methamphetamine on his person.
As investigators continued interviewing witnesses, police determined Moran was the suspected shooter in the incident. He was subsequently arrested on an attempted murder charge.
Authorities said the investigation remains active and ongoing. No additional information about the victim’s condition or the circumstances leading to the shooting has been released. Police have not announced whether additional charges or arrests are expected.
