DEADWOOD, S.D. — The City of Deadwood is taking steps to regain its Certified Local Government (CLG) status, a designation city officials say would provide new funding opportunities and specialized training for the community’s Historic Preservation Commission.
Deadwood has been without the designation for nearly two decades. City leaders believe restoring the status will strengthen local preservation efforts and provide additional resources to help protect the community’s historic character.
To qualify as a Certified Local Government, a municipality must maintain a historic preservation ordinance, operate a qualified preservation commission and demonstrate a commitment to identifying and protecting historic resources.
Supporters of the effort say the certification would give Deadwood greater access to grants, technical assistance and professional training programs that can aid preservation projects throughout the city.
The proposal is expected to move through the necessary review and approval process before the city can formally apply for certification.
